Perform Site Searches with the Google Mobile App
[via Lifehacker]
iPhone/iPod touch only: The Google Mobile app has a hidden secret that can save tons of time looking up web pages on your iPhone: an undocumented shortcut that performs Google site searches. Let's say, for example, you want to read our original post on the Google Mobile iPhone app. Just fire up Google Mobile on your iPhone or iPod touch and start typing in Lifehacker until the Lifehacker homepage shows up in the search results. Then just touch and hold down on that result for a second or so, until the selection flashes. You'll notice that the search box now lists lifehacker.com in a small blue box.
Now all subsequent text you search will perform a Google site search (which you can do from a regular Google search box by typingsite:lifehacker.com 'search terms'). This trick works for any web site, meaning you can skip loading a web site in Safari if you just want to use its search box; use the Google Mobile app's site search trick for much quicker results. iPhone 2.0 Update to Add Polish (and Apps)
[via Lifehacker]
If you've already got an iPhone or an iPod touch and you aren't planning to buy the new iPhone 3G, you've still got goodies coming your way from Apple this week. Right beside the iPhone 3G, Apple is set to release the iPhone 2.0 software update (now unofficially available!), its new App Store (now open!), and iTunes 7.7 (now available!)—so if new hardware's not in your future, at the very least new software is. While the iPhone 2.0 update won't add any mind-blowing features to your device, it does promise to fill in a few gaping holes in the touch interface. (Oh yeah, andthe App Store, scheduled to open today, lets third-party developers fill in the rest.) Apple chief Steve Jobs announced iPhone 2.0 features during his WWDC keynote, but that was over a whole month ago—so let's take another look at what exactly you're getting this week in the iPhone 2.0 update.
Note: The iPhone 2.0 update will be free for existing iPhone owners, but will cost iPod touch owners $9.95.
What's Good (and Free!) in the iTunes App Store
[via Lifehacker]
More than 550 new applications arrived for the iPhone and iPod touch this morning in iTunes' brand new App Store and more than 130 of them are available for free. This morning we're taking a look at the best free applications for your iPhone and iPod Touch, available after the 2.0 software update officially arrives (or after you've grabbed the unofficial update). Check out our list after the jump—and check back throughout the morning, as we'll be updating it with more picks as we find them.
Note: Most of the apps listed here work with both iPhones and iPod touch models, but we've noted where an app requires the iPhone's voice, SMS, or GPS capabilities to run.
Remote Controls Your iTunes Library
The iTunes App Store's marquee freebie, the Remote app turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a remote control for your media library. Remote works almost exactly like the iPod application on your device—the main difference being that rather than playing back music on your iPhone or iPod touch, you've got access to your entire iTunes library and you're playing it over your computer's speakers.

How to install applications on iPhone for free and safe?
[via iphone-tool]
If a new iPhone or iPod touch found its way under your tree and you just can't wait until Apple officially supports third-party application development to extend its functionality (who can wait until February?), it's time you jailbreak your favorite new portable device. We've covered two methods for doing so already, but that feisty Apple keeps on changing things up, and the latest firmware (which all of you new owners are likely running) requires a bit more finesse before you gain access to the throng of great apps that have already been developed for the iPhone. So today we're jailbreaking that iPhone or iTouch of yours to open it up to the wonderful world of third-party software.
NOTE: I've only tested these instructions on my iPhone using a Mac, so I can't absolutely guarantee the same level of success on the iPod touch or Windows computers. However, the software was made to jailbreak either the iPod touch or the iPhone on either Windows or Macs, so it should work fine on either. That said, I'll be referring to the iPhone through the rest of these instructions. If you're looking to install apps without activating your iPhone with AT&T, our pals over atGizmodo have covered that.

Use your iPod as the ultimate presentation accessory
[Turn Your iPod into the Ultimate PowerPoint Accessory via Lifehacker ]

The Micro Persuasion weblog describes how to turn your iPod into an excellent presentation accessory.
Using a program called iPresent It, you can turn any PowerPoint presentation or PDF into a series of images. You can then import these images to your iPod, at which point you could do your whole presentation as an iPod slideshow. The post suggests that if you want to ditch your laptop for your iPod when giving presentations, you want to be sure the iPod will work with whatever projector you're using (damn right!). To me, the tips for using your iPod to rehearse your presentation sound like the most useful, since you could easily pull out your iPod, start your iPod's stopwatch, and rehearse your presentation any time, anywhere. — Adam Pash
